Our Architecture

The house was built according to Gothic, Queen Anne, and Stick Victorian architecture styles.

This house was known for its innovation and for being the first house with central heating in Port Townsend.

Frescoes

Among the most notable features of this beautiful home are its frescoes. The frescoes were painted by a Seattle artist named Otto Chapman.

A fresco of the four seasons, inspired by George Starrett's wife, Anne, adorns the main foyer. The ceiling features a solar calendar that illuminates the rose glass center with a red arrow during the solstice and equinox to indicate the season. (Pictured on the right)

Staircase

An additional feature of the foyer is the free-floating spiral staircase. It is built from five different types of wood and has two complete turns.

According to the Smithsonian, this is the only known free-floating staircase still in use in the United States today.
